Published by at 4:55 am under Film & TV

A movie is never a one-man show. Producers, editors, cameramen, writers, directors and actors work together to produce a film. Big-budget films spend millions of dollars to create the best possible movie, hiring specialist to teach actors skills necessary for creating believable role. For example, to play the role of King Leonidas in the movie 300, actor Gerard Butler took sword-fighting classes to understand the proper methods for holding and swinging a sword.

Movie directors hire well-known specialists in dance, martial arts and military combat to recreate a realistic experience for viewers. For instance, a movie director for an upcoming dance movie may ask actors to train at Woodland Hills dance studio to gain the necessary coordination and skills to perform a role. If you’re curious about what kinds of classes and training actors receive, here are some notable roles and training some actors and directors have received.

Josh Hartnett and Ewan McGregor in Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down reenacted the 1993 incident when a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter was shot down while U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force soldiers captured Somalian delegates. In order to accurately portray the methods and skills of U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force operatives, the cast took a two-week course training with U.S. Army Rangers at Fort Benning. The cast learned Ranger history, salutations, lore, call outs and combat techniques.

Martin Scorsese’s Script for Casino

Casino was based on the life of Frank “Lefty Rosenthal, a Mafia member who ran several casinos for the Mafia. For the movie script, Scorsese collaborated with Nicholas Pilleggi to write the script. However, before any writing took place, both men worked tirelessly gathering information about real-life Mafia members to understand the dialect, dress attire and code of ethics to make the movie as real as possible.

Zack Synder’s Preproduction Preparation for 300

Two months before filing began on 300 director Zack Synder had order the creation of hundreds of shields, spears and swords that would be later used in the movie. In addition to the weapons used, over 600 customs were created that Zynder would use for both the Spartan, Persian and Athenian soldiers in the movie. The pre-production crew also had to build a suitable set for the actors that portrayed the landscape of Sparta and the Battle of Thermopylae.

Actors, directors, film producers all work together to create a realistic experience, whether it means subjecting actors to Woodland Hills dance lessons or spending weeks overseas to learn military combat. Actors and directors go to great lengths to ensure the movie is produced correctly to create a realistic experience for those watching at home.
